THE COAST OF THE PROVINCE OF RIMINI

The coast of the province of Rimini stretches for 33 km from the municipalities of Bellaria - Igea Marina, Rimini, Riccione, Misano Adriatico and Cattolica. To the north, it confines with the province of Forlì-Cesena and to the south with the province of Pesaro-Urbino (which is in the Marche Region).
The coast is sandy, the seabed is gradually sloping and the water is very shallow.

In the stretch of sea directly in front of the coastal town of Bellaria - Igea Marina, Rimini (only in the part to the north of the canal port), Misano Adriatico and Cattolica there are breakwater rocks, which are placed parallel to the coast in the first two and the last resorts mentioned above and perpendicular to the coast in the third resort mentioned. There are also some barriers underwater in the stretch of sea in front of the coast of Riccione, situated close to the boundary with the municipality of Misano Adriatico. However, these artificial barriers, which aim to protect the beach by hindering coastal erosion, also obstacle the natural flow of the water currents that would guarantee a better mixing of the waters.

From north to south, the resorts along the coast are Bellaria Igea Marina, Rimini, Riccione, Misano Adriatico and Cattolica. The beach is interrupted or remodelled at the mouths of the province's numerous waterways and in the built-up port areas (where swimming is forbidden). In order from north to south, these are:

  1. Bellaria Igea Marina canal port, which is at the mouth of the River Uso;
  2. Pircio Brook;
  3. Pedrera Grande Canal;
  4. Viserba di Rimini Port;
  5. The mouth of the Marecchia River bypass channel, an artificial canal that has been used to shift the natural flow of the final part of the river to the north;
  6. Rimini canal port, built exploiting the final part of the natural bed of the Marecchia River;
  7. The mouth of Marano Torrent;
  8. Asse Brook;
  9. Riccione canal port, which is at the mouth of Melo Brook;
  10. Alberello Brook;
  11. Agina Brook;
  12. Portoverde Harbour;
  13. The mouth of the River Conca;
  14. The mouth of Ventena Brook;
  15. Cattolica Harbour, built at the mouth of Tavollo torrent.
Other outlets to the sea that existed in the past have been eliminated and their respective waters channelled into the general drainage network. When there is very heavy rainfall and the flow from these waterways is greater than the capacity of the drains, excess water flows directly into the sea close to the shore (except in Cattolica where a penstock takes drain water about 500 metres out to sea and away from the coast).
