Activities

Arpa Emilia-Romagna, through its provincial coastal districts and in accordance with the local health authorities (Ausl) manages all activities related to bathing waters with respect to the protection of public healt and well-being. In particular, Arpa:

  • carries out the monitoring required by law. The only exception is in the Ferrara province, where it is done by the local health authorities;
  • submits proposals to the Mayor( the highest health Authority in Italian municipaplities), in collaboration with a medical team of the local health authorities responsible for public health prevention, to eventually prohibit bathing  in circumstances that are potentially harmful to public health;
  • informs the public through the common media (web, local press ...) in compliance with legislation enforcement;
  • carries out emergency response activities 24 hours a day, together with the local healt authorities, in response to reports and warnings from private individuals with regard to all environmental matrices, including incidents which relate to coastal bathing water.

All of the specified tasks above are mainly carried out during the bathing season. Additional activities, such as statistical analysis and reporting, are accomplished later in the year in order to define the trend of the entire season.

The resulting documents are then made available to the competent Authorities, the media and the public to inform them on the actual situation with regard to bathing waters.
